Status and Duration:
When you
initiate a dialup connection, the Connect button shrinks
uncovering a field that shows the status of your connection as follows:
-
After initiating a dialup
connection, but before the connection is established, this field
displays the call progress information (depending on the version of
your operating system).
-
If your computer is
connected, this field displays the duration of the current connection
(i.e., the elapsed time since the connection has been established).
BPS (Connection bps):
This field displays the maximum possible speed for this connection (in
bits per second). Note that this is not necessarily the actual speed;
it is just the speed that the two ends of the connection have agreed not
exceed.
IN and OUT Speedometers:
The IN speedometer (on the right) measures the actual speed of data flow
from the Internet into you computer, whereas the OUT speedometer (on the
left) measures the actual speed of data flow from your computer to the
Internet. Both speedometers show the speed in Kilo Bytes per second
(KB/s).
IN and OUT Speed Graphs:
Each of the speed graphs display the speed vs. time for the last few
minutes. Horizontally, each small square in the graph represents 1
minute of time. Vertically, each small square represents a speed of 2
KB/s, and the whole height of the graph represents 6 KB/s.
IN and OUT Bytes:
The right field displays the total number of bytes that flowed from the
Internet into your computer since the current connection has started.
The left field displays the total number of bytes that flowed from you
computer to the Internet since the current connection has started.
Local and Remote IPs:
The Local IP field displays your current IP number, and the
Remote IP field displays the IP number of the network access server
at the other end of the dialup connection. Obviously, these IP numbers
are shown only when there is a dialup connection.
